AbstractSixty-three patients with loss of vision following head injury were subjected to decompression of the optic nerve by the transethmoid route. This paper discusses the criteria for selection of patients for surgery, the results of the operation and the prognostic factors determining the results.

— One hundred consecutive patients were studied because of stress incontinence between 1990 and 1993. All the patients agreed to follow an out-patients combined therapeutic rehabilitation protocol: physiotherapy, biofeedback and FES. The short and medium-term results were correlated with all the studied parameters (personal, obstetric, anamnestic, clinical, instrumental). In this unselected population of patients affected by stress incontinence, the full recovery and/or improvement rates of the short-term rehabilitation therapy amounted to 26 and 73%. Such rates are significantly changed by some parameters: severity and the physiopathologic mechanism of the stress incontinence, high parity rate and/or patients’ age. A more careful selection of patients may help us achieve much better results. However, pelvic floor rehabilitation is an efficacious and conservative therapeutic procedure in the treatment of female urinary stress incontinence.

The recombinant protein technology considerably promoted the development of rapid and accurate treponema-specific laboratory diagnostics of syphilis infection. For the last ten years, the immunodominant recombinant inner membrane lipoproteins are proved to be sensitive and specific antigens for syphilis screening. However, the development of an enlargedT. pallidumantigen panel for diagnostics of early and late syphilis and differentiation of syphilis stages or cured syphilis remains as actual goal of multidisciplinary expertise. Current review revealed novel recombinant antigens: surface-exposed proteins, adhesins, and periplasmic and flagellar proteins, which are promising candidates for the improved syphilis serological diagnostics. The opportunities and limitations of diagnostic usage of these antigens are discussed and the criteria for selection of optimal antigens panel summarized.

The infusion of new technology into the offshore industry has resulted in the introduction of many types and variations of new diving systems. In addition to conventional hyperbaric manned diving and manned submarines, these include atmospheric diving suits, tethered remotely controlled submersibles, one atmosphere diving bells with manipulators and a variety of remotely controlled subsea tools. This paper reviews the current status of such systems, describes operating experiences with typical systems, and suggests criteria for selection of preferred systems. Areas of usage include exploratory drilling, field construction and development, survey, and inspection and maintenance.
